Drug Abuse Resistance Education is a 10 week program taught to 5th grade students with a goal to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. The program is taught in each class once a week for the duration.

At the end of the program their is a graduation ceremony that the D.A.R.E officer conducts and awards graduation certificates.

During D.A.R.E. classes children participate in skits demonstrating the 9 ways to be in charge. They work in groups to complete workbooks and participate in class drawings for D.A.R.E. prizes. Before graduation, an essay contest is held and the overall winner receives "Darren" the stuffed Lion Mascot for D.A.R.E.


D.A.R.E. was first introduced in Lake Mary in 1993 at the Lake Mary Elementary School. Officer Marie Crawford is currently the Department's D.A.R.E. Officer. She teaches this program at both the Lake Mary Elementary, Lake Mary Preparatory and Crystal Lake Elementary schools.

The picture above to the far right is of the DARE car winning an award at the "Orange County Sheriff´s Office 4th Annual 9-11 Memorial Car Show" Best in show for "Contemporary Law Enforcement" The show was on 09/15/2007 and PFC Marie Crawford is pictured with the trophy.
