Bike Helmet Program

The Lake Mary Police Department wants to make sure you are riding safely on bicycles and scooters. This requires always wearing a helmet and making sure your helmet fits properly.

Our police department participates in a free bicycle helmet program funded by the Florida Department of Transportation. This program provides children, teenagers, and adults with free properly fitted helmets. You can call the Community Relations Division at (407) 585-1341 or communityrelations@lakemaryfl.com to make an appointment to be fitted for a free helmet.

A limited supply of helmets is available in various sizes. Helmets are available on a first-come-first served basis, while supplies last.

Parents/legal guardians must accompany children to the appointment and must sign the Bicycle Helmet Agreement.

Florida bicycle law 316.2065(3) (d) requires that a bicycle rider or passenger under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that is

• Properly fitted
• Fastened securely
• Meets a nationally recognized standard (Consumer Product Safety Commission)

Wearing a bicycle helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries and fatalities by 48-88%, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
